North End Tacoma, Washington

North End Tacoma, Washington is also called North Tacoma. A solidly middle class, World War I-era suburb right in the middle of a most happening city works well for everyone. The North End of Tacoma is wealthier and statistically more educated than average (25% possess a graduate or professional degree). This  is handy, as waterfront properties are increasingly expensive.

North Tacoma was the first settlement in the “City of Destiny” located in the Puget Sound Region. The first cabin was built by Job Carr in 1864, and Old Town was established in 1871. Neighborhoods in North Tacoma are: North Slope, Old Tacoma, Proctor District, Prospect Hill, Ruston, Ruston Way, Skyline, Stadium District, and .Yakima Hill

The University of Puget Sound, a 97-acre campus of Tudor Gothic buildings is set among Tacoma's native fir groves, contributes much to the cultural life and entertainment in the North Tacoma. "Foolish Pleasures" is an annual festival of digital films written, directed, acted, and produced by students. UPS offers 23 varsity sports, including varsity kayaking. The on-campus Slater Museum of Natural History contains over 72,000 specimens (and the Science on Display elements exhibits a 27-foot juvenile grey whale skeleton).  Puget Sound's radio station, KUPS "The Sound," at 90.1 FM was ranked 9th in the nation by the Princeton Review. ( PETA voted Puget Sound the nation's third most vegetarian-friendly campus in 2006).

Tacoma Little Theatre, a volunteer community theatre, produces a varied five-play main stage season and offers year-round educational programs for adults and youth. TLT, founded in 1918, is among the oldest community theatres in existence in the United States.

North Tacoma boasts over 25 parks, with the crown jewel being Point Defiance Park.  With 702 acres of oeauty and outdoor enjoyment, Port Defiance is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. The setting, on the Sound and in relation to the city of Tacoma, plus its 100 years of history have woven this park into the heart of Tacoma and Washington State. Offering sports, aquatics, classes and activities, Pert Defiance's stand of old-growth forest, the Washington State Ferries ferry dock,  Carousel, the living history museum Fort Nisqually,   hiking trails, and Logging Museum attract over 500,000 visitors a year. The Zoo and Aquarium is a world leader in captive breeding; here you can see wildlife such as puffins, polar bears and walrus.

The North End is located minutes from the Tacoma Convention Center, Tacoma Dome, Tacoma Mall, King County Equatic Center, Port of Tacoma, Wild Waves, Puyallup Fair Grounds, Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, Enchanted Parkway, Emerald Queen Casino, and the Glass Museum.
